Easy Masala Khichdi


  1. Split Moong Dal, 0.5 cup

  2. Rice, 1 cup

  3. Onion, 2 medium, finely chopped

  4. Garlic, 5-6 cloves, minced

  5. Tomato, 1 medium, finely chopped

  6. Ghee or Oil, 2 tsp

  7. Peppercorns, crushed, 1 tsp

  8. Coriander leaves, finely chopped, 1 tsp

  9. Sugar, 2 tsp

  10. Salt, to taste


  1. Wash the rice and dal twice over, drain and keep aside.

  2. In a pressure cooked, add 2 tsp ghee or oil. Add crushed pepper.

  3. Add finely chopped garlic, onion and tomato.

  4. Sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add 2-2.5 cups of water and bring it to a boil.

  5. Add salt and sugar. Stir well.

  6. Add the washed dal and rice. Close the lid of the cooker.

  7. Allow it to cook for 1 whistle (approx 5 min.).

  8. Serve with a side of pickles, raita and a green salad.
